96/4 Tin-Silver Solder

96/4 tin-silver solder is a lead-free alloy under ASTM B32, designed for soft soldering with good finish, clean wetting and strength superior to conventional tin-lead alloys. It is used on copper, brass and stainless steel when the procedure and flux are compatible, as well as in sanitary maintenance, process equipment, refrigeration and assemblies where lead must be avoided. It differs from 95/5 tin-silver by the silver proportion indicated in the reference, and from 99/1 tin-copper by offering a silver-containing formulation for projects that specify it. It must not be confused with silver brazing rods; this reference belongs to soft soldering and requires capillary technique or soldering iron/torch application depending on the assembly.

Selection guide

• Choose 96/4 when the specification requests lead-free tin-silver in that composition.
• Use 95/5 tin-silver if the procedure is already qualified for that alloy.
• Use 99/1 tin-copper if a silver-free alternative is sought and the specification accepts it.
• Confirm compatibility with stainless steel, copper or brass according to flux and process.

Use recommendations

• Mechanically clean the joint and avoid touching prepared surfaces with grease or dust.
• Apply flux suitable for the base metal and for a tin-silver alloy.
• Heat the part uniformly to promote continuous wetting.
• After cooling, remove residues and validate the joint according to the equipment service.
