50/50 Tin Solder

50/50 tin solder is an ASTM B32 Sn50 tin-lead alloy with equal parts tin and lead, known for good wetting on copper, brass and general workshop work. It is used in traditional non-potable plumbing, sheet metal, instruments, accessory repair and joints where more fluidity than 30/70, 33/67 or 40/60 is needed. The higher tin content improves its ability to spread over properly prepared surfaces, but it does not make it suitable for potable water or lead-free projects. It differs from 63/37 because it is not the typical choice for fine electronics and does not solidify with the same eutectic behavior; its value is in general maintenance and non-sanitary metal joints.

Selection guide

• Choose 50/50 when good fluidity on copper or brass is needed without a lead-free requirement.
• Use 40/60 if you want a more pasty, general-purpose option for sheet metal.
• Use 63/37 for electronics when the specification allows lead.
• For potable water, request lead-free tin-copper, tin-silver or tin-antimony according to the project.

Use recommendations

• Clean the base metal to remove rust, varnish, grease or surface contamination.
• Apply compatible flux and heat the joint, not only the filler.
• Allow the solder to wet the entire area before removing heat.
• Do not subject the joint to load or testing until it has cooled correctly.
