ESAB ER309L

The ESAB ER309L dissimilar TIG filler rod is a stainless filler for the GTAW/TIG process classified under AWS A5.9 ER309L. It is selected when the work requires joining stainless steel to carbon steel, making transition layers or solving repairs where the base metal is not a similar stainless joint. Its ER309L classification differentiates it from ESAB ER308L: ER308L is mainly used for 304/304L stainless steels joined to each other, while ER309L offers a more appropriate option for dissimilar joints and different dilution conditions. It is useful in industrial maintenance, fabrication of mixed supports, equipment repairs and erection where materials are combined due to availability, cost or design.

Selection guide

• Use ER309L when the joint combines stainless steel with compatible carbon steel.
• Select ER308L if both sides are 304/304L stainless or similar equivalents.
• Validate the base metal and service before approving a dissimilar joint.
• Request available packaging according to consumption, procedure and required traceability.

Use recommendations

• Clean both base metals and control cross-contamination during fit-up.
• Consider carbon steel dilution when defining technique and bead sequence.
• Use dedicated tools for the stainless side when finish is critical.
• Keep ER309L rods identified separately from ER308L to avoid incorrect application.
