Superon ER309L

The Superon ER309L dissimilar TIG filler rod is a stainless filler for the GTAW/TIG process under AWS A5.9 ER309L classification. It is used in joints between stainless steel and compatible carbon steel, as well as transition or repair work where the joint is not similar stainless. For industrial maintenance, this classification helps solve equipment adaptations, mixed supports and components where a more robust filler selection is required against base metal dilution. Compared with Superon ER308L, ER309L does not compete for the same main use: ER308L is for similar 304/304L stainless; ER309L is purchased when there is a combination of materials.

Selection guide

• Select ER309L for dissimilar joining between stainless steel and compatible carbon steel.
• Use ER308L if the joint is 304/304L stainless with similar stainless.
• Confirm service conditions before welding equipment exposed to corrosion.
• Define packaging and quantity according to project consumption and dispatch logistics.

Use recommendations

• Remove rust and paint from the carbon steel before tack welding.
• Clean the stainless with dedicated tools to avoid contamination.
• Control heat and sequence to reduce distortion and excessive mixing.
• Keep the rod identified as ER309L throughout erection.
