ESAB ER308L

The ESAB ER308L stainless TIG filler rod is a filler for the GTAW/TIG process classified as AWS A5.9 ER308L. It is used mainly on joints in 304 and 304L austenitic stainless steels, equipment fabrication, line maintenance, stainless structures, tanks, supports and component repair where a clean, controlled bead is required. The letter L identifies a low-carbon version within the classification, useful when the procedure seeks to reduce the risk of sensitization in the heat-affected zone. Compared with the ER309L references in the catalog, this page corresponds to similar stainless joining; ER309L is normally reserved for transition or dissimilar joining between stainless steel and carbon steel.

Selection guide

• Select ER308L when the base metal is 304, 304L or a compatible equivalent stainless steel.
• Confirm the steel grade before purchasing; visual finish does not identify the alloy.
• Use ER309L if the application is a dissimilar joint between stainless steel and carbon steel.
• Define packaging and diameter based on thickness, position and welding procedure.

Use recommendations

• Clean the joint with abrasives dedicated to stainless steel to avoid ferrous contamination.
• Protect the root when the procedure requires it to maintain corrosion resistance.
• Do not mix ER308L rods with aluminum or carbon steel fillers in the same station.
• Keep the material identified by brand and AWS classification until consumed.
